A long-standing complaint amongst Cypriots regarding the UK's Sovereign Base Areas on the island is the enforcement of the ban on netting small birds which migrate through the region.  The ban is actually a Republic of Cyprus law, which is matched by an SBA ordinance given the UK's policy of matching ROC legislation unless there is a very good reason not to do so.  The problem is that the ROC then tends to turn a blind eye to the massive numbers of birds netted by its citizens, whilst the SBAs do enforce it.  It has been more than a few years since I was last out there, but every taverna used to have a jar of pickled birds behind the bar.  I could not say whether the Cypriots preferred them grilled or fried, but they were certainly a form of bar snack.

I think you can still see plenty of pickled birds by the end of the evening in Ayia Napa...

The blackbirds were singing, so the parellels are not that close  :)
