This nicely illustrates the likely 'fate' of Roman soldiers who died on campaign - a simple and probably hasty burial without the recovery of artefacts. No showy, expensive tombstone for all who pass by to see.

If indeed a marching camp, then for that number of skeletons, either a camp that was actually occupied for more than the odd night, or... perhaps... evidence of the infamous epidemic?  Which might also account for why bodies were tossed in without salvaging equipment?

I felt the phrase "Complete skeletons as well as disarticulated bones were found in defensive ditches, storage pits, wells and shallow graves" meant that there was a whole can of worms waiting excavation. A fascinating find
