Thank you for those links.  Most interesting.  I have read about the Ptolemaic ports for trade with India but had never asked myself the obvious question about Seleucid trade with India.

Since posting I have bought Bhakari, S.K Indian Warfare - An Appraisal of Strategy and Tactics in the early medieval period. 

The best so far and when combined with Sandhu, it is able to provide a reasonable view on the period.

The incident reminds me of one in school where someone defaced a piece of art in the corridor. The Deputy Head summoned the senior prefects and sent them to bring the culprit to justice. It was a quick job - the boy had written his nickname
