Sounds like cheap journalistic hyperbole as we have come to expect from the BBC.  Plundered might be a better term.

Not at all surprising; Islamist groups such as Daesh are best known for destroying ancient treasures, but even they actually stole and sold off vastly more. The European constabulary that is the very best at hunting stolen artefacts is the Italian Carabinieri.  They did some excellent work in Iraq during the first few years after we got rid of Saddam.

I remember visiting a museum in Rome where the little plaques accompanying each ancient statue not only highlighted which parts were fakes for the original work that had been stolen, but from which era the fake  originated.  Often, the original body part (stolen and subsequently recovered) was displayed alongside the complete (partially fake) piece.
