The Shield Ring is one of Rosemary Sutcliffe's books set in the Lake District as the Viking and Saxon residents try to hold off the Normans.  I remember it being gripping stuff and ending with the burial of the leading Viking warrior on a mountainside, based I think on a real burial that was excavated in the 1950s?
