I imagine that would be for the horse or donkey to pull the barge, which was common practice until barges were powered.

yes on reflection it is but a gravel path specifically rather than just a 'dust' path caught my eye

Local news reported small items found in the canal bed; pins, broaches and a sling stone.
The archaeological team are anticipating the route will lead them to undiscovered sites
such as waterway control points, settlements, warehouses and such.
