I wondered why the reconstruction of this Cumbrian skull had been named Agnes. Apparently this is a Latinized form of a Greek name meaning "chaste". The name was popularised for Saint Agnes, reportedly a virgin martyred during the Diocletianic persecutions. What's the connection I thought? Then I discovered that the name later became associated with Latin agnus or "lamb". Suddenly, it all became very clear.
