There is, and IIRC the same has been argued for Frankish shields. I don't really know if the sizes of excavated shields follow a consistent small-early/larger-pattern, though.

Judging from the BM report I linked in the original message in the thread, there looks to be considerable variation in that single cemetery, although none of them are 1m. size I associate with Viking period shields.  Also, having seen the BM Sutton Hoo shield reconstruction, it isn't exactly a buckler.
