Royal hand-me-downs would not have been exempt from the standard problem with such things, fit!

In the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, retailoring clothes was not uncommon, especially when the original fabrics were expensive/exclusive.  I doubt the royals would expect the recipients to keep these gifts as precious relics.
