I believe every Samurai army I have encountered in nominally ancient/medieval games has used 16th Century figures regardless of its nominal date.

Which is a bit of a shame in itself, as there are a few nice earlier Samurai ranges out there.

There are indeed. Mine are a mix of Essex and Eureka, which are both earlier period ranges.

I have the Old Glory figures for the later period though I stalled when painting them partly because I couldn't decide whether to put the sashimono on them. Not sure how early they were used.
