I wondered where Nostradamus had got all his info from.
More seriously people have always been clever, Hero of Alexander must have been a very clever chap, it would be amazing to find good evidence of what he actually managed to make but I am sure there have always been fiction/myth of gods/wizards being able to make/animate the inanimate I suspect from prehistory. The Greeks just wrote it down in a still currently accessible form.
