I heard from a certain Xerxes that it was not a Greek Golden Age at all.

Strange isn't it. I remember doing Pericles and the Golden Age in my Ancient History A level. One of the great democratic heroes, after whose death Athens went into decline. Yet read it differently and we see a rich man who gets his political opponents exiled, is complicit with the mistreatment of allies, dipping into their defence budgets to produce nice architecture and statues etc.  Sounds positively modern.
