For anyone wanting to know more about medieval castle design development, as well as the reasons for building (or laying siege to) castles in particular locations, this book (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Warfare-during-Crusades-Michael-Fulton-ebook/dp/B07ZH7BYLX/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PS5MITQKT1IN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.n0hrAFDVoDEoFNMVHKtnNw.c_rz3uC2SOR0LvRyiyAwaXkZmq8G7iq7S8uIvx1kK3Q&dib_tag=se&keywords=siege+warfare+during+the+crusades&qid=1755764264&sprefix=siege+warfare+during+the+crusades%2Caps%2C119&sr=8-1) might be of interest.

Because it is a short filler piece, it has treated English castles in isolation, which is a mistake because there are international trends in play, as Nick points out.  The English just followed trends on circular/polygonal towers and concentric design, for example.
