Title: DBA session
Post by: Martin Smith on Jul 31, 2025, 12:56 PM
Seven games of DBA between Colin, Richard and myself yesterday. Some were using armies from last week's Devizes tournament (which Richard had missed), Roman Repulblic based, and a few were with armies in the forthcoming Thornbury, Glos. event, which is themed on 'Fringes', SE Asia, the Steppes, Americas etc :-

1. Polybians defended against Seleucids. A hamlet on the Seleucid left was captured by Roman velites, kicking out the Seleucid light troops, and the enemy left suffered as a result. 4-0 Roman win.

2. Early Vietnamese defended v Khmer. A big village on the Vietnamese left proved an encumbrance, and became the scene of much fighting, the Khmer emerging victorious, 5-0.

3. Burmese attacked West Sudanese. The Burmese crossbowmen sniped at the Sudanese right, while on the opposite flank the Sudanese foot scrapped with Burmese javelinmen in a deep gulley. Leading an attack in the centre the Burmese El general was swamped and slaughtered, after which the Sudanese took control of the field for a decisive win 3g-1.

4. Attila attacked the Khazars. Both Khazar flanks moved to surround the Huns, while from their stationary centre their artillery sniped successfully at some Goth footsoldiers in Hunnic service. However, the Huns counterattacked on both flanks, and managed to overcome the enemy horsemen, winning 4-2 after a stiff fight.

5. Timurids invaded against the Mongols, on a snow-covered battlefield. A swirling and very bloody melee developed along the whole Mongol front, in which the Mongol commander was unhorsed. Timurid win, 5g-3.

6. Seleucids attacked a Ptolemaic force. Both a scythed chariot strike at Ptolemy himself and an elephant charge on his supports were stopped dead in their tracks, and despite their best efforts the Seleucid force slowly but surely crumbled under Ptolemaic pressure. Ptolemy won by 3g+Sch to 0.

7. Finally, Eastern Forest Americans were invaded by Odenathus' Palmyrans. In woodland on the Palmyran front the Indian skirmishers got the better of the fight, and a charge by the Forest American commander cut down some Roman allies for a 4-0 win.

Good to see some Khazars in action.  As for those Roman allies in the last game, they must have taken a wrong exit at a seriously big roundabout - or maze of mini ones - to end up in America!

They're part of the Palmyran list (under Odenathus)... 'political advisors'... but yes, the Palmyrans and their Roman friends were very lost. Either some sort of rift in the Time-Space continuum, OR it was last game of the day, and we were using whatever was left from the theme armies (I suspect the latter...) 🙂.
