Very basic but there is a natty little quiz at the end. I scored 14 :)
Drat. 13 :(
Sixteen.
Ooooo. all hail the imperator!
Hey, still got two wrong. Probably should have known shortest reign, but not too embarrassed by ignorance of over-eating death...
;D
Over a sandwich lunch my son has just introduced me to Macsen Wledig, aka the Imperial pretender Magnus Maximus, an area of history that either I had not encountered before or, more likely, that had slipped through the Swiss cheese of my mind. What was most interesting to me was the Welsh source that has the commander of his rear-guard, Conan Meriadoc - now there is a name replete with allusions - settling with his soldiers in Armorica, which ties in with other evidence that the Bretons were a product of Welsh Gaelic settlement in the late Roman/early post Roman period, not least being the linguistic point that Breton is an insular Gaelic, not continental Gaelic language.
All this prompted the thought that perhaps what lies behind Holly's huge painting programme is a campaign not just to put the Picts and Saxons in their place but to go further and bestride the post Roman world like a Colossus? Make Wales Great Again (not that it ever wasn't) ::)
And as an aside I use the moniker Macsen Wledig on some other forums
