Unsurprising.  I mean, I suspect most Americans are not from the British Isles.

Not so surprising, given that there are so many centuries between first voyages and likely trading post establishment, and hard DNA evidence.  I also wonder whether "Canaan" is too specific within the Levant.  Herodotos of course reckoned the Phoenicians originally came from south-west Arabia...

This doesn't surprise me at all. Port cities have always been cultural melting pots.

So it means Western Phoenicians, or Punics. The original study (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-08913-3) is headlined "Punic people...", and Science.org has changed this into something more than a bit misleading. At first it had me wondering where on earth the people of Tyre and Sidon did come from.
