Study results from Nature via Science, Phoenicians not from Canaan (https://www.science.org/content/article/most-phoenicians-did-not-come-land-canaan-challenging-biblical-assumptions).
Saw that Jon...very interesting, thanks
Unsurprising. I mean, I suspect most Americans are not from the British Isles.
:-\
Not so surprising, given that there are so many centuries between first voyages and likely trading post establishment, and hard DNA evidence. I also wonder whether "Canaan" is too specific within the Levant. Herodotos of course reckoned the Phoenicians originally came from south-west Arabia...
This doesn't surprise me at all. Port cities have always been cultural melting pots.
So it means Western Phoenicians, or Punics. The original study (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-08913-3) is headlined "Punic people...", and Science.org has changed this into something more than a bit misleading. At first it had me wondering where on earth the people of Tyre and Sidon did come from.
