Fascinating article, Dave.  When I went underground below St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, I discovered much of the same "lost" Roman civilization as highlighted here.

In the meantime, for those who would like to explore these things from the comfort of their armchairs, Auntie made a documentary, Rome's Invisible City, some years ago that used a whole load of 3D laser scanning to recreate what is underground.  For a taster, have a look here (https://scanlabprojects.co.uk/work/romes-invisible-city/).
