Post by: aligern on Apr 03, 2013, 08:43 AM
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Byzantine-Bronze-PENDANT-14AD-depicting-SOLDIER-with-HELMET-SHIELD-SWORD-/221208027944?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338106a328&autorefresh=true

Has 'provenance' from Near East and sort of shows a chap with a large creston helmet, oval? shield and spear

I think it's a kite-shaped shield, so Byzantine would seem plausible. And the pose with sword on shoulder seems more Byzzie than Roman.

Then is he a Saint? And the crest a halo?

Somehow I'd missed the halo - but yes, I think that's what it is.

A religious memento would make sense. Sort of a pilgrim's badge. Just the sort of thing that one might by as a souvenir or that a soldier might carry as a charm.
