It does show the one major drawback of the firelance: someone has to light it when the enemy is within easy spitting distance.

At one Mamluk-Mongol battle - I forget which - the Mongols neutralized Mamluk incendiaries by the simple expedient of not advancing for a while after the Mamluks had lit their weapons, so they were spent when the armies came blows.
