I did groan seeing the Carabinieri described as "police"; of course in one regard they are, but they are not PC Plod with a snorkel... Exactly the right chaps to protect the site.

Oh I know, had dealings with them in Iraq on artefact protection. Very impressive lads.
I remember seeing one sculptural display in a Rome museum. It looked like a complete statue from the classical period, but the accompanying explanatory boards described the origin and age of its constituent parts. Basically the head was the oldest part and everything else had been acquired or manufactured at various later dates over subsequent millennia.
Truly, one is constantly surprised at how much is new in the old stuff.
