This seems to be a perennial topic for folks to have a go at, always seem convincing but I am not familiar enough with the source material to really comment.
(I still worry about the age of the dog - would have been better named after Methuselah than Argos.)
Of course, this makes the assumption that there was only one dog with that name rather than a succession of replacement pooches...
Or that Argos may have been picked up as a pet by Odysseus while on campaign but had the good sense to take a direct ship back to Ithaca when it was over?

As the point of the tale IIRC is that the dog remembers him, this seems unlikely.

Yes, I do suspect that dogs have it sorted. Isn't that the original meaning of being a cynic. ;D 8)
