Title: Not So Little Battles 2026
Post by: dwkay57 on Feb 27, 2026, 11:22 AM
As young Jim observed, my solo battles are becoming much larger and this one was my largest (and longest) to date.

All of my Romans took on my Persian king and four of his satraps.

Highlight report attached. More detailed reports available via my website.

PS. No buildings in this battle.

More like a mini campaign than one battle, with fighting along such a wide frontage.

Mega sized table and forces. Don't know how you keep track of it all, David / dwkay57.

I assume it's a dedicated games space so you can leave it all in situ and play it out in several chunks of time?

VERY IMPRESSIVE

Yes Carl, the Principia is my dedicated wargaming space. It alternates between battle and painting configurations.

The battle did take a long while to play out (troops were deployed on 4 Jan and final moves on 19 Feb) but play was not continuous by any means and generally in chunks of a couple of hours here and there (difficult to play when one is visiting relatives for a week!)

My rules are spreadsheet based to carry out all the complex and detail heavy crunching aspects I have devised. This includes tracking morale and casualties. So it is fairly easy to stop and start a battle without too much head scratching.

My second solo battle of the year - the Battle of Five Pigs Plains - was a bit smaller than my first and featured an invasion by one of my Persian satraps against my Armenian army of Tigranes the Lesser. So, lots of historical accuracy, especially as the Persian satrapy is supposed to be from the north east part of the empire!

In the photograph, the cavalry of the Persian satrap are in melee with the cavalry of the Hiberian and Albanian allies of Tigranes, with the infantry of the allies rushing to provide support from the right. Further up on the right, the Armenian infantry move forward to face the Bactrian and Persian satrapal infantry waiting on the left.

Battle reports for those with time on their hands and coffee in their mugs available on my website.

Does look an intriguing game. I always feel battles where both sides are pretty poor can be more interesting that armies of competent troops  8)
