Useful wargamer related snippets for the Isle of Wight.

1. The Airfix church model is based on the church at Bonchurch.  Bonchurch being the site of a battle between the French and English in 1545.
2. According to local lore, five hundred archers were raised on the Island to fight in Brittany in 1488. They fought at the battle of St Aubin-du-Cormier. Only one survivor, who returned to Mottistone. Mottistone has a nice garden and, on the down above, a standing stone. This is where moots were held - the Moot Stone (it is said).

For those who wish to read more of the tale of Sir Edward Woodville's disasterous expedition to Brittany, see

The Cheke family, from which came the survivor Diccon, were lords of the manor at Mottistone. So, a gentleman archer, if archer he was.
