Not many of the originals to be found, so making use of a knock off would make a lot of sense.  Your average Snorri or Harald is not going to be able to tell the difference anyway.

Yes, we are not looking at modern coin collecting. Snorri would want his medallion for display - to demonstrate he was a successful dreng. He probably checked it was real gold but didn't ask for a certificate of authenticity.
