14th century ghent militia

[Erpingham]

The 14th century frescos of the Ghent militia on the march recorded on the walls of the Leugemeete (St John and St Paul's church) are well known. Unfortunately destroyed in the 19th century, they were copied for posterity.  These copies are kept in the Ghent City Museum (STAM). While rooting about, I found their catologue online. This also contains a watercolour of the whole procession in small scale which allows the order of the images to be identified. So, the march is led by a mounted crossbowman, followed by the White Hoods with bows and goedendags. After them the crossbow guilds. Interestingly, there are no shield bearers. Then various guild companies, with pike and goedendag and assorted other weapons (a couple of longhandled axes, a falchion and a couple of glaives).
