The whole "Getting to Iceland" thing is a bit tricky if you're determined to hug the coast  ;)

Having looked at his plot of test routes, I'd suggest he follows a coast hugging strategy himself. It had not occurred to me that the Viking fleets sailing from Denmark to England wouldn't have crossed the North Sea and would have had to sidle down to Calais, or that those crossing the Baltic would have had to sail the long way round the edge. And that's before you need to get to Iceland or Greenland.

It's actualy rather depressing that a doctoral student (it doesn't say which type of archaeology) believes in 'coast hugging'................. :(
