Cistercians tended to run their operations on an industrial scale.

I live a moderate walk from Furness Abbey which was one of the leading Cistercian foundations. The Abbot dealt with the King of Man as an equal and had his own port where government clerks were not especially welcome.

I agree entirely with the industrial comment, they controlled sheepwalks throughout much of Cumbria and North Lancashire and were major exporters
