Post by: Ian61 on May 20, 2025, 06:32 AM
Interesting clip[ on BBC today about this bucket https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cly31wdl4x2o

Odd to have a cremation alongside the big burial but...
PS - that's a fearsome warrior on the side - ¿Nubian?

Remember Sutton Hoo is a big site, with multiple burials, both before and after the "big one".

Provided you don't expect more than a grassy field  :) Actually, the museum is quite good (or was when I was last there some years ago).

For those wanting to study the hunting scene, including the second figure (an archer), here's the NT cataolgue entry

There have been several recent videos on the latest iteration of Time Team about the recent excavations at Sutton Hoo, including the recovery of what they think is the base of the bucket.

Must confess I haven't got one as such. Always paired in my mind with the Chinese saying,'may you achieve all your ambitions but one.' When you think about it, it makes sense.

I had heard of the Sutton Hoo bucket but had not realized that there was a hole in it and am pleased they may now be able to fix it.
