Good news on funding
Excellent news
Of course, the third generation of Birleys to excavate Vindolanda. Their grip on the site has outlasted most would-be Roman dynasties :D
good point!

I admit I had a fleeting and doubtless unworthy thought that they were branching out to another fort because the Vindolanda well was running dry :)
It will be interesting to see what Magna reveals. There are other sites too that have been barely touched.
all too many and probably beyond our lifetime

Archaeology, we should recall, is destruction. We shouldn't be excavating things just from curiosity but rather to protect at risk sites or answer questions (e.g. dating of occupation). In this case, we need to dig to assess the condition of the site and how it is changing. If at risk remains (e.g. organic) turn up, I'd expect further rescue activity in the future.

Rest assured, you were not alone in your unworthiness!
