I think we're so used to the wonders of stratigraphy that we forget how close to the surface the bronze age can be. We have a field never ploughed where you get to the bronze age by doing little more than stripping off the turf.
And in that layer you can find tractor lynch pins and musket balls in the 'wrong order' because a passing vehicle has pressed one down further than the other :)
