Title: Early Medieval siege tactics
Post by: Erpingham on Apr 12, 2026, 02:01 PM
Another interesting short piece (https://www.medievalists.net/2026/04/burghal-hidage-and-assault-forces-in-medieval-siege-warfare/) by David Bachrach, this time based on one of his father's papers which looked at the Burghal Hidage and what it meant for siege warfare.

It has some interesting calculations on the effect of Anglo-Saxon archery. For all the claims of statistical rigour and experimental data, these are a bit speculative IMO, but still worth a look. Personally, my speculation is that the casualty rate is too high.

The original paper is linked at the bottom of the article and has more detail. It can be viewed for free on Jstor.
