This reminded me of the stairs on my route into local Tesco. Similar design but the Roman one is in slightly better nick.

I wonder if leaving food out for Santa is picked up from an ancient Roman tradition of leaving food offerings to the Lares?  As a young lad, Santa certainly fit the description of a mythical, godlike being to me.
