Goldberg, E. J. (2025) Tractoriae and the logistics of Carolingian entourages. Early Medieval Europe, 33: 158–182. (https://dspace.mit.edu/bitstream/handle/1721.1/162769/Early%20Medieval%20Europe%20-%202025%20-%20Goldberg%20-%20Tractoriae%20and%20the%20logistics%20of%20Carolingian%20entourages.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y)

An interesting examination of Carolingian logistics, including estimates of retinue sizes. Some great details here, like the number of chickens a vassal with a military retinue should receive per day (2). But the level of organisation and why it all collapsed is very interesting.

I think I'll also add this paper to the logistics reading list.

Especially to the French. We once visited a French motorway service station that Heston Blumenthal recommends for roast chicken - the Aire du Poulet de Bresse.
