Having read the article, it reminded me that Peter the Great's bed, that he made himself, is too short to lie down on, so perhaps the belief lingered in Russia as well?

Box beds were common in the Hebrides.  You can see examples in preserved traditional buildings or black houses, descendants of the medieval longhouse.

Not surprising considering they keep you warm at night!
